Perfect Picture Book Fridays are back!!
And we're starting off with tons of fun!!! A great book and a giveaway!
Today, I am thrilled to be sharing this hot-off-the-presses new book from the one and only Iza Trapani!
Title: Little Miss Muffet
Written & Illustrated By: Iza Trapani
Sky Pony Press, September 10, 2013, Fiction
Suitable For Ages: 3-7
Themes/Topics: bravery, positional and directional words
Opening:
"Little Miss Muffet
Sat on a tuffet
Eating her curds and whey.
Along came a spider
Who sat down beside her
And frightened Miss Muffet away.
All through the room,
She zipped and she zoomed
And looked for a place to hide.
A mouse came to find her;
It scurried behind her.
The dainty Miss bolted outside."
Brief Synopsis: Poor Miss Muffet is frightened by a spider. But as she rushes to find a place to hide, she's frightened by a mouse! Running from the mouse she is frightened by a frog! No matter where she runs, she seems to find something to be afraid of. What is the poor girl to do?
Just for fun, here's an interior page:)

Links To Resources: Iza has created many wonderful resources for this book which I'm sure will be available soon on her website, but for now you can get them my emailing her at iza[at]izatrapani[dot]com and asking for them. (I had hoped to include them here, but blogger won't allow uploads of PDFs! I will refrain from sharing my feelings about blogger since this is a kid-friendly blog :)) The resources include a Miss Muffet Coloring Page, a Miss Muffet Hidden Animals challenge, a Miss Muffet Maze, and a page that allows you to make bookmarks. The book also includes many positional and directional words which makes it excellent for preschool! Please enjoy the book trailer HERE. And Iza writes a wonderful blog which you can visit HERE.
Why I Like This Book: If you haven't had the pleasure of reading Iza's books, I can't recommend them highly enough. Most of them are based on familiar, beloved songs - the kind all children and parents love to sing together - including Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Row Row Row Your Boat, I'm A Little Teapot, Jingle Bells, Itsy Bitsy Spider (celebrating it's 20th anniversary this year having sold over a million copies!) and many more. Iza takes the basic verses and spins them into delightful, original stories that are a joy to read (and sing :)) aloud. Her accompanying art is warm and inviting, a safe-haven for young children, full of comfort, perfect for bedtime or anytime. Miss Muffet is another brilliant addition to her list and a must-have!

1. Name something that YOU are very afraid of!
2. Tell us your favorite Iza Trapani title and why you love it!
3. If you're feeling writerly and inspired, write your own verse of Miss Muffet in which she is afraid of something besides the traditional spider!
You may do one of them or all of them, whatever you like!
Please leave your comment by Sunday September 15 at 5 PM EDT. At that time, a winner will be selected randomly by random.org. The winner will be announced Monday along with a very special post! Which you'll just have to wonder about. All weekend :)
PPBF bloggers, please add your post-specific link to the list below. I can't wait to come and visit you all after our long summer hiatus!
Have a terrific weekend, everyone!
Yay for Iza! It sounds adorable. She has loads of activities to go with it. That's so cool. Pp.s. Thanks for your email, mine is playing up.
ReplyDeleteI love when new books are released from authors I love :) If you want to try to win the book, Catherine, come back and say what you're scared of or one of the other options :)

So good to have you back with PPBF too, Vivian :) It's going to be so fun having the whole gang together again today :) My mom had an aunt who used to crush june bugs between her fingers - and you know how big and juicy-looking june bugs are! YUCK! Your name is in the virtual hat! :)
ReplyDeleteOkay spiders for sure!
ReplyDeleteThen you won't mind if I start singing: "Itsy bitsy spider climbed Catherine's bathroom wall...." :)

Susanna, thank you SO much for featuring my book and for all the nice things you said! You are the best! Xox
ReplyDeleteI like Ms. Trapani's "Itsy Bitsy Spider" book because it's so cute! I actually found a copy of it in the doctor's office! Great PPB Ms. Hill! I like the idea of Ms. Muffet getting scared by everything! The illustrations are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for the kind comments, friends! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteYay! PPBF is back!
ReplyDeleteI don't know Iza but many of my PB writer friends do and I know how talented she is by their praises! This looks like a super fun book. Congratulations to Iza on its publication!!
As for me, I'm deathly afraid of heights. :P
Happy Friday!
So nice to be back! I miss all the great PPBF posts and connections over the summer. Don't put my name in the hat because I am buying my own copy, but I like to participate in writerly thigs!
ReplyDeleteAlong came a snake,
Who sat up for cake,
To celebrate Roald Dahl's birthday.
Congratulations to Iza! I have a couple of her books that I used w/my kids and in my teaching years. I'm afraid of all things buggy, including spiders!
ReplyDelete"Lil Miss Muffett" sounds so cute! Love those illustrations!
ReplyDeleteI am afraid of failing. and spiders. and rejection. Many things. I guess I am a fraidy Kat! :)
Three cheers for Iza and her many accomplishments. I do feel bad for poor Miss Muffet. Seems she can't catch a break from being frightened.
ReplyDeleteI'm a more than a little afraid of snakes and that is all I can say before I faint just imagining their slithering forms. Eek!
Little Miss Muffet, with her big chicken puppet. Decided to conquer her fears. Outside by a tree, they saw wasps - there were three! Some things are just scary, my dear!
ReplyDeleteOh, Susanna - thanks for bringing PPBFs back and for a wonderful giveaway. Miss Muffet looks adorable and I'm eager to learn more about this author.
Yay, we're back. *waves at the gang*, now it feels like this writing season is really under way. I am so glad you reviewed MISS MUFFET, Susanna, I was hoping somebody might!
ReplyDeleteRejection is my big fear and THE BEAR WENT OVER THE MOUNTAIN is my favorite Iza book thus far!
Hurray for Iza! I love her books. Looking forward to reading this one. I am afraid of failing. If only it weren't so easy to do. :) Wow, I was afraid to hit post, so I just read below, and it appears I'm not alone! Who knew!
ReplyDeleteYaY Iza!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woo woo woo!! I can't wait to get my copy so I can review it over at my place. The illustrations are just magnificent! The kidlets will feel like they're right in the book. Huzzah Iza! Fantastical review Sus!
ReplyDeleteSo glad PPBF is back too. YaYYYYYYYYY!!!!
P.S. Blogger stinketh!
Congratulations to Iza on her new book! Hi Susanna, I am afraid to fly, which is pretty strange since my father, father-in-law, and brother-in-law are all pilots. My father's favorite calming statement to me: "You are statistically safer in an airplane than in your bathtub."
ReplyDeleteMy link doesn't link. Here is another attempt if anyone would like a chance to win:http://julierowanzoch.wordpress.com/2013/09/13/ppbf-mr-tiger-goes-wild-and-a-giveaway/
ReplyDeleteHi Susanna - so glad PPBF is back! and what a fun review of Miss Muffet. I love spiders - but am afraid of ticks! And while I love bumblebees, I am afraid of yellow jackets - the kind that nest in the ground and you don't see them until you rototill their nest - then ya gotta run fast (and they can fly 13 mph & I can't run that fast!)
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! So happy PPBF is back!! Missed you all. Can't wait to read Iza's new book! My hands down favorite is I'm a Little Teapot. We have it in our church nursery and the kids love it. (Also I performed it when I was 5.... and I still know all the moves!)
ReplyDeleteI don't like picking favorite titles, Susanna, that can feel a bit like picking a favorite child! So then, what am I afraid of? Creepy crawlies don't generally bother me. I can trap and remove spiders, lizards whatever. I AM afraid of falling (from heights) and failing. So it's the two F's for me.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to reading everyone else's PPBFs!
So pleased to see a another knew book from Iza. I am afraid of snakes. Don't even like them in movies. For now I'll have to say The Bear Went Over the Mountain -- it was such a colorful, warm and inviting book. What I like most about her books are the songs that accompany the stories. It disturbs me today to hear young children singing pop/rock songs, when they should be singing age-appropriate songs. Her fun books are ones that I love to give as gifts to parents with young children. Also love How Much is that Doggie in the Window -- brings back memories of my singing the song as a child.
ReplyDeleteSo glad PPBF is back!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your latest release Iza! Sounds delightful and full of laughs.
I am scared of snakes. I love her books for her splendid rhyme!
Yay for PPBF! Can't wait to read your choice, Susanna. I love new versions of classics. If I were Miss Muffet, I would discover that my tuffet was up in tree. I'm afraid of heights.
ReplyDeleteOops! I forgot to write my PPBF post. This will be my reminder for next week. . .
ReplyDeleteI, too, am scared to death of big spiders, and large tropical centipedes, one of which fell on me when I was a missionary in Papua New Guinea years ago!
I am not familiar with Iza's books. . .thanks for the introduction. They are charming!
This looks pretty clever. I am afraid of rejection! Not a good quality for a writer. Please let someone else win. I have so many books there is no more room at the bookcase.
ReplyDeleteYay for the return of Perfect Picture Book Friday! I LOVE Iza's books but hadn't heard of Miss Muffet yet, so I'm glad you made this selection. My favorite of Iza's books is Froggy Went A-Courtin because I loved that song as a child, and because it was one of the first books I bought for my daughter when she was a baby. So we've been reading Iza's adorable version for a long time now. :-)
ReplyDeleteI know! Itsy Bitsy Spider came out the year my daughter was born and we read the covers off it :) I love Iza's books!
ReplyDeleteNo YOU are the best :) I was very glad to do it! You know how much I love your work :)
ReplyDeleteSettings
Itsy Bitsy Spider has a special place in my heart too, Erik, because it's the first of Ms. Trapani's I ever read, and it came out the year my daughter was born and we read it over and over and over! :)
ReplyDeleteHahaha :) I hope someone else picks this up and keeps going :)
ReplyDeleteThat is why God made you petite then, Teresa :) Happy Friday to you too! :)
ReplyDeleteWell rejection is very hard to deal with, Rosi, and you're brave to share your fear. I think in this crowd you are not alone!!! :)

Iza will be thrilled that you're getting a copy, Julie :) And I like your writerly verse. I wonder what kind of cake tempts a snake? Chocolate MOUSE cake? :)

I do not LOVE bugs, but I'm not really afraid of them. I just think they're gross. Except I like ladybugs :) Thanks for joining in :)
ReplyDeleteThen you are braver than most for facing those fears and trying anyway, Clar! :) I'm noticing a theme in the fears people are listing though... a lot of people don't like bugs or rejection!
ReplyDeleteI hear you, Angela! And I hate how people say you don't have to worry unless their head is triangular because that means poison. Well, I can imagine ANY snake's head looks triangular!!! :)
ReplyDeleteYou will love her, Barbara! She is all-around terrific! And thanks for your fabulous rhyming lines - I love them! :)
ReplyDeleteI know it, Joanna! I'm so happy to see everyone here today - it's like old home week :) Thanks for sharing your fear (that's a popular one today!) and your favorite Iza title. I do love the painting in the bear book - so lush and beautiful :)
ReplyDeleteI notice we have a fear theme going here: almost everyone has said falling, rejection, or bugs/spiders!
ReplyDeleteBlogger doth stinketh! I agree completely! And it is messing up my website headers and making me cranky. Someday I'm going to have a website and blog that go together and look professional like everyone else's!
ReplyDeleteHahahahaha! That is so funny, Teri! Next time you have to go somewhere, make sure you don't travel by bathtub :)

I'l check it and try to fix it

and maybe learn to type while I'm at it :)

Amen to that, Sue! I live in a very bad tick area where we now have a new tick-borne disease to be afraid of that is fatal in 30% of cases - NOT FUN and I'm afraid of ticks too for that reason! As for yellow jackets in the ground, I once ran over a nest with the lawn mower... you should have seen me racing across the lawn discarding clothing as I tried to get them out from under my shirt after that incident :)
ReplyDeleteSettings
Hi Laura!!! So glad to see you! I was thinking of you yesterday and going to send you an email, which I still plan to do...! Now then. I expect a video of you performing I'm A Little Teapot as soon as humanly possible!!! :)
ReplyDeleteSo diplomatic, Wendy :) As for your fears, I am so interested in the fact that almost everyone has posted the same 4 fears. I think we could present evidence at a psychological research party or something. I'm waiting for someone to confess to a wildly different fear than failing, falling, bugs, or rejection! :)
ReplyDeleteSettings
I know, Pat. Iza's books are all so wonderful, aren't they? To me they are the epitome of what picture books should be! Loved your choice for today though! I'm really not sure if we have anything else on the list on that topic!
ReplyDeleteSettings
It is fun having everyone together again today, isn't it? And I agree - Iza is a master of rhyme!
ReplyDeleteA tuffet in a tree would be a tricky situation! :) Here's hoping your tuffet will stay where it belongs :) Can't wait to see what you posted, Laura! :)
ReplyDeleteSettings
Oh, Jarm! If you haven't read Iza's books you are in for a treat! I think you will love them! And I must say... I do not think I like the sound of a "large tropical centipede"!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI hate spiders, too, so I can identify with Little Miss Muffet!!!
ReplyDelete"Away ran the spider, his heart all filled with fright..."
ReplyDeleteSO glad PPBF is back (although I can't participate except by reading people's posts until next week, because I'm too busy promoting Erik's new book on my blog this week!!!!)
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I'm trying to think of a fear I have that hasn't already been mentioned in the 56 comments that have gone before me. (I have lots, but they've all gone and hidden under the bed, afraid I'll mention them.) Scary books and movies REALLY scare me. I won't read 'em or watch 'em. I had to be strongly cajoled to watch the first Harry Potter movie.
Hahaha, Beth! A twist on who's afraid of who! I love it :)
ReplyDeleteSettings
I'm so glad PPBF is back too! It's so great to see everyone :) And yay for you having a fear no one's mentioned yet! :) When I was in college my roommate dared me to watch The Shining! Of course I did it because it was a dare. I will let you know if I ever recover :)
ReplyDeleteSettings
Poor spiders! They get such a bad rap. I always like to think of Charlotte :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Susanna! FAILURE is not my friend and neither is rejection.
ReplyDeleteSo true for all of us! :)
ReplyDeleteI always read/sing Mary Had a Little Lamb with my kindergarten kids at the beginning of the school year. And Baa Baa Black Sheep. And we sing Itsy Bitsy Spider....
ReplyDeleteAll such great childhood songs, aren't they? So nice to see you again, Sandi! :)
ReplyDeleteSettings
Spiders, no question! Luckily, my boys are not afraid of them and will happily get rid of them for me!
ReplyDeleteHow very handy, Amy! :)
ReplyDeletedrat! I missed PPBF as I so excitedly prepared for the blog tour of Erik's new book. I actually posted it early due to it being already the date down here...oops! Loved your choice of book and unfortunately I'm very much a miss muffet. Anything moves, has more than two legs and I'm off! I'll be here next week for sure... See ya!
ReplyDeleteHi Diane!!! I'm so happy to see you! I've missed you all summer :) I'll look forward to seeing you on the PPBF list next week :) And you are duly entered with your fear of creepy-crawlies :)
ReplyDeleteSettings
Nice! :D
ReplyDeleteLOL! But maybe if I were 6' 2", I'd get over my fear of heights?
ReplyDeleteMaybe :) Or maybe you'd just do yourself an injury fainting from that height :)
ReplyDeleteOh Susanna...I am so happy to see Iza's latest book being plugged. Iza is soooooo talented. Of course, I would like a chance of being chosen to receive a "signed" copy. I'm deathly afraid of being locked in an underground parking stairwell...again. :-)
ReplyDeleteI know - Iza is amazing, isn't she? But you, Tracy, win the prize for most original fear on this page! :) That sounds like a story I need to hear :)
ReplyDeleteSettings
I am very afraid of the dark under the stairs, especially if they are open stairs. *shivers* Even if they aren't open, I STILL run up the stairs after turning off the light. And I'm not 5 anymore :)
ReplyDeleteI don't write rhyme, but I thought I'd try it for fun. To those of you who do write rhyme, my apologies. :-)
ReplyDeleteLittle Miss Muffet
Stood on her tuffet
Trimming a bright red rose.
Along clopped a lobster
Who plopped down beside her.
It snipped and it snapped at her toes.
Eek! cried Miss Muffet.
She leaped off her tuffet
And dashed across the thick lawn.
The lobster gave chase
But found not a trace.
The agile Miss Muffet was gone.
Hahaha...probably. :P
ReplyDeleteLOVE this, Cheryl! Tons of fun!!! :)
ReplyDeleteWell, you just never know what could be down there, Lauri! I recommend getting a dog :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susanna! It really was fun to give rhyming a try. :-)
ReplyDeleteIf this was your first try, I'm impressed! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susanna. :-)
ReplyDeleteWell, I've been gone for the weekend and looks like I'm late for the party! and you folks sure know how to party!! Unfortunately I haven't read any of Ms Trapani's books! How could that have happened?! They all sound like tons of fun. I'm going to have to get my readers on the ball!! The only thing that comes to mind that I'm afraid of is ssssssnake ssskins! I've only seen an actual snake in a glass box. But I encounter those skins around here quite a lot. Eeeewww!
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't read Iza's books you're in for a treat Rhythm! I think you'll especially like Oh Where Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone, How Much Is That Doggie In The Window and Rufus and Friends School Days and Rhyme TIme :) And I have to agree... I don't like sssssssnake ssssssskins :)
ReplyDeleteI had a look at her website and there are sooooo many to choose from! Where to begin?! I'll start with the library! And see which ones they have! Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, yay for Iza! The illustrations look gorgeous. There seems to be a lot of good new going around lately... Some for you too, Suzanne! I used to be afraid of spiders but not any more. Now with four young children, I'm more afraid of someone catching the flu or riding his bike without a helmet... those kinds of things. :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent, Cheryl! I love the clopping, snipping, snapping lobster!
ReplyDeleteHow lucky you are not to be afraid of creepy crawlies!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joanna! Rejection is a valid fear, but in the publishing world we need to have a thick skin and keep in mind it is one (or a few) person's opinion and not a reflection on us personally.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Hannah! Yours are valid fears- not silly phobias!
ReplyDeleteYes, Rhythm, please get your readers on the ball! :-) I often have dogs in my books :-)
ReplyDeleteSssssnake ssskins- yuk!
Yay!
ReplyDeleteHaha! I laugh, but I know what you mean!
ReplyDeleteOh my, Tracy- again? That is a horrid thought...
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the kind words!
You and I both, Diane! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLucky you, Amy!
ReplyDeleteThank you so so much, Sandi!
ReplyDeleteSusanna, after seeing the Shining many years ago, I still hesitate when I walk through a doorway at night!
ReplyDeleteAnd with me, Christine! Spiders terrify me.
ReplyDeleteI try, but it doesn't help :-)
ReplyDeleteJulie, thank you so much! Froggie is my personal favorite too!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love YOU!
ReplyDeleteYou are definitely not alone!
ReplyDeleteA large tropical centipede sounds terrifying- especially in your lap! Yikes!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
Haha, Laura! That could be a funny version of the Muffet rhyme! This just came to me:
ReplyDeleteLittle Miss Muffet , sat on a tuffet
Eating her curds and whey.
Along came a squirrel
Who frightened the girl
And it carried her tuffet away. (up the tree! :-))
Thanks, Darshana! No snakes in this book :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Patricia! And don't worry- no snakes in this book!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Laura! May I join Susanna in seeing you do the moves?
ReplyDeleteI agree, Sue! Having been bitten by deer ticks and treated for early Lymes this summer (and last)- ticks are a valid fear indeed. And yellow jacket stings are so painful...wish we could outrun them!
ReplyDeleteThank you Teri! I am afraid to fly to, though I do it fairly frequently. It's never fun, but I will have to think of your father's calming statement next time. Good one!
ReplyDeleteWhy you little jokester! Haha!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Robyn! I look forward to being on your site too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Pam! No, you are definitely not alone. Lots of super achievers here!
ReplyDeleteNot again! Thanks, Susanna :-)
ReplyDeleteDon't worry Angela- no snakes in this book! Thanks so much for the kind words!
ReplyDeleteYou and I both, Clar! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteThank you Tina! Some bugs are creepy and some are intriguing but spiders are always terrifying to me.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am thrilled, Julie! Thank you so much! I love your rhyme- and love Roald Dahl!
ReplyDeleteHAHA!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Teresa! Well, I guess I won't take you rock climbing then :-)
ReplyDeleteErik, thank you so much! And I so look forward to reading your book! Bravo to you! You are something else!
ReplyDeleteThank you, my friend!
ReplyDeleteThank you Catherine! Uh oh, Susanna is trying to scare us with spiders!
ReplyDeleteAwesome, Erik!
ReplyDeleteSo Catherine took a bath
ReplyDeleteThen slept calmly through the night.
Those really sound awful, Vivian- though I am not familiar with them, nor do I have a desire to do so!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the kind words!
Haha, beth! I love the frightened fears hiding under the bed! And I also can't watch scary movies. Those scenes stay with me for a lifetime...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Susanna! :-)
ReplyDeleteI am thanking you a lot today! Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteI love your rhyme, Barbara- especially the big chicken puppet! Thanks!
ReplyDelete:) We have a mutual admiration society :)
ReplyDeleteSettings
Hahaha! You win! Perfect ending, Iza :)

Thank you so much, Iza! You're very kind. I can't wait to read your newest book. I love your work.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Iza. I was actually using a chicken puppet in peace-class when it occurred to me that it's also something that kids say when someone's afraid of something. Your book looks like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm new here, but I'm so excited about PPPF! Isa, I've always adored rhyme, especially nursery rhymes. Your books are excellent! I'm looking forward to reading many more:)
ReplyDeleteYay! Thanks for joining us, Sue! I recognize your name though... are you sure you're new? :) Iza's books are amazing, aren't they? So beautiful and fun!
ReplyDeleteYes, Iza's books rock, Susanna! But I'm also looking forward to taking your class:)
ReplyDeleteI love these illustrations. Looks like a wonderful book! Since I'm not in the US, I won't enter, but I just wanted to thank you for sharing this post at Booknificent Thursday last week! Looking forward to seeing what you have to share with us this week!
ReplyDeleteTina
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Tina! Iza is one of my favorites - it's lovely to find an author where you like every book! :) Let's see... what did I add to Booknificent Thursday this week... I think it's The Day The Crayons Quit - which is very clever and funny and I think you'll enjoy it if you get a chance to read it :)
ReplyDelete
