The book I have to share today is a little different and very cute and fun. For starters, how can you not love a book that's called A LIttle Book Of Sloth? :)

Suitable For Ages: there is no recommendation from the publisher - the photographs are suitable for all ages, the text has some higher level vocabulary, but I think would be enjoyed by ages 5 and up.

Opening: "It all started with Buttercup. Baby Buttercup turned up on Judy's doorstep as a tiny orphan. She was a few weeks old and desperately needed a new mom. Buttercup's new home provided more slouching opportunities than your average tree branch. So she chose the best seat in the house and decided to stay."
Brief Synopsis: This is a photographic story about a sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica. Wonderful photos of the many sloths-in-residence are accompanied by anecdotes and facts about sloths.

Why I Like This Book: I don't know about you, but I've never read a book about sloths before. This book is beautiful, fun, and educational. Written by Lucy Cooke, a British filmmaker, zoologist, photographer and founder of the Sloth Appreciation Society, it highlights this lesser-known animal in an irresistible way. Ms. Cooke takes pains to mention at the end of the book that sloths are wild animals, not pets, and that children (and adults :)) can show their appreciation for these sweet creatures by joining the Sloth Appreciation Society. A great choice for the animal lovers in your life :)

I just saw this in my Amazon email of new books. This is great that you already read it. The only sloth book I know is by Eric Carle. I've never heard of a sloth sanctuary. Very cool! Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteI love that the book promotes a sanctuary for sloths. It sounds like a rescue farm of sorts. I'm going to look it up because I wonder why sloths need a sanctuary unless people think they make good pets and then realize they don't and then don't want them or something like that.

CUTE! I have just critiqued a picture book this week about a sloth!
ReplyDeleteIt's very cute, and I especially like the author's emphasis on responsibility - that these are not pets, but wild animals, and that the sanctuary exists to help them go back to the wild.
ReplyDeleteI think you really would like it, Erik. It's written to appeal to a slightly older audience, and the information is interesting to all ages. I am not technically picture book age, but I loved it :)
ReplyDeleteI learned from this book that a sloth's top speed is 15 feet per minute, Rhythm - I'm sure you can run a LOT faster than that :) I think you would enjoy this one :)

ReplyDeleteI think it's very appealing because it's interesting facts combined with VERY cute pictures, and the sloths are individuals with names, so you kind of get to know them. I think kids would really like it!
ReplyDeleteYes, the sanctuary is to take care of them until they can be released back into the wild. One of the ones who is there couldn't cling strongly enough and fell off his mother :( And I think some of the others are orphans, or got injured somehow. But yes, I bet some people try to keep them illegally as pets with bad results.

ReplyDeleteYes, I really appreciate that she emphasizes that at the end - so important that the sanctuary exists to help release sloths back into the wild, although I think a few of them end up staying because the wild doesn't work for them.
ReplyDeleteI think it's wonderful. So great that they can rehabilitate orphaned or injured sloths and return them to the wild. And the book is really interesting.

They are so cute. I just watched a segment yesterday on the "Today Show" about sloths. I didn't know much about them. I as amazed at what I learned, so I'll have to check this book out. They said yesterday they only eliminate once a week and that it takes their systems a long time to digest food. Loved the video.

ReplyDeleteLove this, Susanna! And last week my entry was Eric Carle's 'Slowly, Slowly, Slowly' said the Sloth...so now we have two PPBF sloth resources.:) I like this one because with the photographs, it gives kids a realistic view of what a sloth really looks like.

Joanna posted a sloth book today too! We're on a roll :) And seriously, I don't know what happens to the time. I've been up since 5:30 AM and it's already 3:20 and I haven't gotten done nearly what I'd like to!!!

ReplyDeleteMy husband hates it when I say "awwwwwww" but that photo demands that I say it! ;) I don't think I've ever seen a PB about sloths either. I'm really glad that there is a warning not to treat sloths as pets. It really drives me bonkers when people try to keep wild animals for pets and then release them randomly when they can no longer care for them (but I won't go on and on here...LOL!).

Well, it is 4:15pm here...and I've JUST linked my PPBF. But I'm so excited...because last night my 'In Just Spring' story came to me...in a flash...and I scribbled it down...so now it just needs a little 'spit and polish' and I will be ready.:) I thought, with the 12x12 submission and the Barbara Karlin Grant competition looming, I might not be able to produce something for that...so hurray!

ReplyDeleteI know! Between Vivian, Joanna and me we've posted 3 sloth books in the last week! I like this one because it's informative and fun with wonderful photographs, but I haven't actually read theirs yet! :)

ReplyDeleteThe cover and the opening sentence really captured my attention. I think Vivian did a review about a Sloth last week. Hmmm....wonder if sloths will be the next big thing. I wish I had time to be a slouth. :-)

ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to see that there is a children's book about sloths! I always found them fascinating critters, & their lifestyle shows us how to slow down a bit! I just may have to do some sketches of sloths!
