Sacajawea Of The Shoshone
Written By: Natasha Yim
Illustrated By: Albert Nguyen
Goosebottom Books, September 26, 2012, Non-Fiction
Suitable For: ages 9-12
Topics/Themes: American History, Sacajawea, Lewis and Clark Expedition, Native Americans, real princesses
Opening: "Clouds of dust swirled across the plains, kicked up by galloping horses. Screams shattered the autumn air. Arrows arced across the crisp blue sky, sprung from Shoshone bows...."
Brief Synopsis: From the book jacket: "One minute Sacajawea was picking berries and the next her Shoshone tribe was being attacked by another tribe. As she ran for her life, she was scooped up and taken far away from her village and family—and into history. When Lewis and Clark happened upon her living amongst a new tribe and chose her to accompany them, they greatly benefited from her skills as an interpreter and guide. From her mountain home to the banks of the Missouri River, over the majestic Rockies to the pounding waves of the Pacific, Sacajawea traveled farther than any American woman of her time."
Links To Resources: Shoshone Facts For Kids, make a map of the route Sacajawea took when leading the Lewis and Clark expedition, How To Draw An Easy Teepee, Goosebottom Books Resources (there isn't a resource listed yet for Sacajawea, but resources are listed for the other titles in this series so I expect a link will show up soon!) try a basket weaving or bead work activity.
Why I Like This Book: As you know, this book is a bit of an aberration for me - it's a non-fiction picture book for older readers, and my usual choices lean toward fun fiction for fours and fives :) The fact that I have chosen it as today's PPB is a testament to how much I liked it. The text is clearly written and includes a lot of information I didn't know about Sacajawea and the Lewis and Clark expedition. I especially loved the side bar type sections which gave extra interesting information about certain things, like the spelling of Sacajawea's name, what she ate, and how she got chosen for the Lewis and Clark expedition. The art is beautiful - a combination of painting and photography that works very well. And I like that this book is a title in the Thinking Girl's Treasury Of Real Princesses and includes a bibliography of sources.

and Super-Sweet Blogging Awards
on me. I think she saw all the chocolate treats and donuts and other goodies that find their way onto these pages :) I am truly honored to have been chosen by Cupcake who is one of my favorite people :) As you all know, I am truly terrible at awards, but I'll give this one a go because it involves dessert :)
The rules are, you have to:
1. Give credit to the person who chose you (the lovely Cupcake as mentioned above :))
2. Answer the 5 Super Sweet questions below and,
3. Nominate a Baker's Dozen (13 blogs)
1. Cookies or Cake? YES!
2. Chocolate or Vanilla? BOTH! gosh, these questions are easy :)
3. What is your favorite sweet treat? Oh. Not SO easy... Would it be cheating if I said cookiescakepie? Yes? Hmm... Well, I do love a really good oatmeal raisin cookie... :)
4. When do you crave sweets the most? All day, every day :)
5. If you had a sweet nickname, what would it be? Hmmm.... Superwoman doesn't really count as sweet... How about Piecake?
Now, about those nominees, this is the part I really can't do because I love you all and hate to choose. So consider yourselves all nominated. (I know, taking the wimpy way out!) But this time I do have one person who must be recognized because she is supplying us with sweet photographs of sweet food. So Stacy Jensen, come on down! I pass these along specially to you! :) Oh, and someone else has had a very hard week in which her sweet tooth underwent root canal, so Robyn, you get special mention as well :) Now that I think of it, Natasha was very sweet to visit so much and respond to everyone! So Natasha, you get them too :) So let see... how am I doing...
1. Stacy
2. Robyn
13. Natasha

Have a great weekend, everyone!
Sacajawea has always been one of my favorite ladies of history. This is my first PPB submission (excited & nervous) let me know if anything needs correcting. And-oh- Susanna, I'm coming over with coffee cup in hand--dibs on the lion cupcake.
ReplyDeleteThe cupcakes look divine; you have truly whet my appetite. Thanks for hosting PPBF and for today's intriguing selections. (Oh, and I love the word aberration!). Happy Friday.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on that sweet award and congrats to Vivian.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winner and to you for your awards, Susanna. And I love those titles as well. Too cute :-)
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like an interesting and valuable book -- thanks for adding it to our PPBs, Susanna!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your sweet, sweet, sweet awards -- apparently not only did Cupcake give you the awards, she also taught you how to count! Creative Counting by Cupcake. Sounds like a book title to me!
Congratulations, Vivian! It's always such fun to see who wins giveaways.
Last week I didn't get around to everyone's blogs -- I apologize to you all. I'll do better this week!
Oh Susanna, I can't wait to read this book! It has to be on the Creating Curious Kids "to read" list. Also, if it's not too late, I would love to spread the PPBF gospel via some bookmarks. Do you still have my address?
ReplyDeleteSusanna, This seems like an amazing book & I love the concept of this series. I can remember back to when my daughters were that age (I won't bore you with the date) & the trouble I had finding books such as Sacajawea. Kudos to Natasha for writing it & the publishers for what seems like a wonderful series. Off to the library today to convince them to order at least Sacajawea & hopefully the series (and let them know about the PPBF blogs).
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Vivian. Love the titles that everyone thought up.
And last, but certainly not least, Cupcake, what a sweet choice you made!
I can certainly see why you like this book, Susanna. And congrats on your award...well deserved! And good job, Vivian!
ReplyDeleteOh-forgot to ask if you could send some bookmarks. I'll drop them at our library. I can email my address. Do you need reimb for postage?
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a beautiful book! I love entertaining picture books that teach something, too. I learn something new, too, while reading aloud to my nieces and nephews!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like an interesting one. I like to learn about Native Americans and resourceful girls. Did Sacajawea have a dog? I think I'll check this one out. Thanks. And congratulations on your awards! Do you get to keep all those cupcakes?! Lucky girl!
ReplyDeleteCan any blogger link up for Perfect Picture Book Fridays? I would love to link up in the future!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Vivian for winning this book. I really enjoyed hearing about this book a few days ago and enjoyed your review. My kind of book. Want to get my hands on it.
ReplyDeleteSusanna, I love your posts...they make me feel better about the long ones that I write. :)
ReplyDeleteFirst of all...THANK YOU for the book! I'm so happy to be building my children's book library...when I retire (at the end of the year) I plan to devote even more time to volunteering in the local schools here, reading and crafting...Sacajawea of the Shoshone looks like a great book to share with the older kids.
Congrats on the awards, Susanna....they are much deserved. :)
And I love the creativity of this community...those alternate titles rock!!!!
And I must apologize for not commenting on many of the PPBF submissions...I will try to do better this week!
Thanks for the shout out Susanna! You are sweet, just like your treat filled posts! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteYou too, Coleen! (And I really loved your title :))
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome for the book, Vivian! I hope you enjoy it! It's really thanks to Natasha - she donated it for the giveaway. Are you suggesting my posts are long-winded? :) Me? The queen of brevity? heeheehee I couldn't even say that with a straight face :)
ReplyDeleteI think you'd enjoy it, Pat!
ReplyDeleteYes, Ash, of course! We'd love to have you :) Just follow the format guidelines on the Perfect Picture Book tab of the blog - you have to scroll way down to the bottom - (or copy the way I do mine :)) The main important thing is to include links and/or suggestions for activities and resources which will make it easy for teachers, parents, day care providers, home schoolers etc to expand the use of picture books at home and in the classroom. If you have any questions, please email me. I'll look forward to your participation :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know if Sacajawea had a dog, Rhythm. We'll have to ask Natasha, although my guess is no. If you haven't met Cupcake, you should definitely trot over and say hi - I think you would love her :)
ReplyDeleteIt was actually a little embarrassing how much I learned reading this book :) Who knew there was so much I didn't know? I hope you get a chance to read it, Laura!
ReplyDeleteIt IS a good word, Barbara :) I'm very fond of it myself. Loved your book for today!
ReplyDeleteSo glad to have you joining the fun as a contributor! You picked a great book and did an excellent job :) And come on over - the lion cupcake is yours :)
ReplyDeleteOf course you are welcome to have as many as you'd like - just let me know how many you want and email your address! They have been printed and shipped, so I'm hoping to have them to mail out sometime next week!

Thanks, Jarm! :)
ReplyDeleteI know, I really love the idea of the series too. I'm all for girl power! I can't remember without checking - did you want some PPBF book marks? If you do, let me know how many and email your address and I'll send them when they arrive - hopefully within a week! :) And that Cupcake sure is a sweetie :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you're excited about the book. I really love the concept of the whole series! Of course you may have book marks! Just let me know how many you'd like. And I probably have your address somewhere, but you could save me a heap of time searching for it if you feel like sending it again :)
ReplyDeleteI love how creative everyone is, and how willing to join in the fun :)
ReplyDeleteHeeheehee! You totally made me laugh with your comment about counting Cupcake stye! :) Yes, it seems she's rubbed off on me :) And the random.org giveaways are always totally random, but it amuses me that some people seem to have exceptional luck - I'm pretty sure Catherine has won more than once, and I feel like Vivian might have won something before too!
ReplyDeleteP.S. No worries about the blog visiting. We are all very busy, and we all do the best we can. I didn't do a very good job last week either - I don't think I got to yours until about Tuesday! It's just nice to be part of a community of kidlit lovers :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Delores! :)
ReplyDeleteThis book looks great. I confess, I don't know much about Sacajawea beyond the (very) little information I learned in school, and I'd love to know more about her.
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love the self-help book titles. Hilarious!
POSTED FOR DIANE at http://thepatientdreamer.com
ReplyDeleteLoved this book and very deserved of a PPBF mention. Also congrats to Vivian so glad she won it. Laughed at your counting... looks a bit like mine...lol.
Then you will enjoy this book, Carrie (although it will not tell you how to get a man to ask for directions :))
ReplyDeleteYes, thank you! I'll email with address details. And hopefully you have one more follower - our local children's librarian had not heard of Natasha's book, the Real Princess series, the ALA Amelia Bloomer list (and we don't live that far from Seneca Falls) or PPBF. She was googling your blog when I left the library...
ReplyDeleteOh, yay! Thanks, Patricia :)

Good question, Rhythm. No, Sacajawea did not have a dog on the trip (a baby was enough to care for!) but Merriweather Lewis had a Newfoundland, Seaman, who was his constant companion on the trip. Seaman was stolen by one of the Native American tribes along the way, and Lewis threatened to send armed men to kill the tribe if they did not return him!
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Vivian!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt was so much fun reading all those titles.
The book sounds very interesting. I was looking up information the other day to spark my title ideas for your Monday post and came across the different spellings of Sacajawea. I learned a lot just on wikipedia that interested me. I will have to grab this my next trip to the library.
Hello Everyone,
ReplyDeleteThank you all for the very SWEET comments (continuing on the sweet theme here) about Sacajawea of the Shoshone. And thanks so much to those who stopped by for Susanna's blog tour stop the other day and submitted those wild and crazy, had-me-rolling-on-the-floor article ideas! It was so much fun to read all your entries. Congratulations, Vivian, for winning a copy of the book. I hope you enjoy her story as much as I've enjoyed researching and writing it. And congratulations Susanna for your sweet blogging awards, and for passing them to me. Yum!
Hope to meet up with you guys at a writer's conference someday, or at the very least, out in the blogosphere.
Happy writing...and blogging!
Many thanks to you, Natasha, for everything! :)
ReplyDeleteHaving had the privilege of reading this book, I now know that there are many, quite varied and complicated, possible spellings! Hope you get to read it, Penny!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool, Natasha! Thanks for telling us!

Sacajawea's story is amazing. She trekked while pregnant and gave birth. Ever see the Imax film about it? She was so tough! I don't think Lewis and Clark could've made the journey without her.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your award.
I think another requirement of that blog award is that you must bake a dozen cupcakes and send them to me. :D
ReplyDeleteWow, Sacajawea trekked while pregnant? Not quite the pregnancy yoga I took. :D
I'm not sure cupcakes would survive a trip to Canada very well :) And yeah, that Sacajawea was something, wasn't she?!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Theresa :) I haven't seen that film, but I'd really like to!
